Oracy
Oracy at Worth Valley Primary School
At our school, we believe that developing speaking and listening skills, known as oracy, is very important for our pupils. Here’s why:
1. Builds Literacy: Talking and listening help children learn to read and write better by expanding their vocabulary and understanding of language.
2. Boosts Brain Power: Discussing and listening enhance children’s thinking skills, helping them learn to express ideas and solve problems.
3. Improves Social Skills: Through oracy, children learn how to take turns, listen to others, and communicate effectively, which is crucial for making friends and working together.
4. Increases Confidence: When children speak and are heard, they feel more confident and valued, building their self-esteem.
5. Supports Academic Success: Good speaking and listening skills help children perform better in all subjects, from math to science to history.
6. Prepares for the Future: Strong communication skills are essential for future success in school and the workplace. Starting early gives children a great foundation for life.
We are committed to helping our pupils become confident speakers and active listeners, ensuring they are prepared for a bright future.

Our debate club meets once a week; the children come together to research a motion using the library and the internet. Once a motion is fully researched, teams are decided and our debate starts.
