At Worth Valley Primary School, our vision for English is to nurture a lifelong love of reading and writing in every child. We believe in creating a rich, immersive literacy environment where every student can thrive and become confident communicators and critical thinkers.
Reading
Fostering a Love for Reading: We aim to inspire a passion for reading by providing engaging and diverse reading materials that captivate the interests of all children. Our goal is to make reading an enjoyable and integral part of daily life at school.
Reading Championship: To encourage consistent reading habits, we have implemented the Reading Championship. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1 (KS1), children are rewarded based on the number of times they read. In Key Stage 2 (KS2), recognition is given for the number of books read. This initiative motivates students to read regularly and builds a culture of enthusiastic readers.
Daily Reading Sessions: Every class has a dedicated daily reading session where children listen to a book being read aloud. This practice not only enhances listening skills but also exposes students to a variety of genres and authors, broadening their literary horizons.
Reading at Worth Valley Primary School v1Writing
Book-Based Writing: Our writing curriculum is deeply integrated with reading. Lessons are crafted around key books, linking to current or prior learning in other curriculum areas. This approach ensures that writing activities are meaningful and contextually relevant, allowing students to see the connection between reading and writing.
Developing Skills through Literature: We use the books chosen for our curriculum to develop comprehension skills and explore different genres. Grammar is taught in context, making it more accessible and relevant. This method helps students understand the practical application of grammar rules and enhances their overall writing skills.
Weekly Grammar Lessons: In addition to contextual grammar instruction, we hold weekly discrete grammar lessons focused on key concepts. These targeted sessions reinforce grammar skills that are then applied throughout the week’s writing activities.
Spelling and Handwriting: We conduct discrete spelling sessions using Spelling Shed, ensuring that students develop a strong foundation in spelling. Daily handwriting practice with Letterjoin helps students improve their handwriting skills, promoting clarity and fluency in their writing.
Belief in Every Child’s Potential: At Worth Valley Primary School, we firmly believe that every child can become a writer. We are committed to providing the support, resources, and encouragement needed for each student to develop their unique voice and writing style.
Through our comprehensive and integrated approach to teaching English, we strive to equip our students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed academically and beyond. Our vision is for every child to leave Worth Valley Primary School with a profound love for reading and writing, prepared to embrace the opportunities of the future
