Music

Music at WVPS

Music lessons at Worth Valley Primary School are engaging and inspiring. Children are provided with high-quality music sessions which increase children’s self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. Our exciting music programme ensures the children enjoy a range of activities including; singing, playing instruments, evaluating, analysing, and composing music. This is a skills-based cyclical curriculum which allows continuity from EYFS through to Year 6. All children experience music from across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres.

All children at Worth Valley Primary School learn to play an instrument within their music lessons, which is a skill that all children develop. The children progressively build up their notation knowledge and ability to read music. Each class also have access to percussion instruments to develop their sense of rhythm and to accompany their singing.

As a school, we thoroughly enjoy singing. We have a weekly singing assembly where everyone comes together and celebrates significant events throughout the year. Using themes to enhance our whole school singing, such as; Remembrance, Christmas, Easter, Halloween and musicals.  Our choir welcomes children from all year groups, where we practice different breathing exercises, learn new songs and understand the importance of music. We sing at St. John’s Church and visit Staveley Court Nursing Home to sing for the residents.

Music has an enormous impact on well-being. Through our music provision. we strive to give children a sense of achievement which improves their self-confidence with group performances enhancing interaction with and awareness of others.

Music also develops an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to students individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world. Children enjoy music either as a listener, creator or performer, which will hopefully spark a love of music that will last a lifetime.
